The 45-year-old Queer Eye star revealed in a new People cover story that a 2021 buccal fat removal procedure led to years of chronic pain, swelling, and complications caused by scar tissue and blocked saliva glands. Karamo says he kept his struggles private while facing constant online commentary about his looks.

“For years, people have been like, ‘Karamo‘s had plastic surgery. He has so much filler in his face,'” he shared. “I was like, ‘You know what? I can’t say anything because you can’t get into fights with the trolls.’ But I was suffering for years in pain and no one knew.”

According to him, he decided to undergo the cosmetic procedure after gaining about 70 pounds during the COVID-19 pandemic and feeling self-conscious about his appearance.

“I was a big boy, and everyone online liked to tell me how much of a big boy I was,” he said. “So, I was like, ‘Okay, maybe if I slim out my face, I’ll be cute.’ It turned into a year-and-a-half of pain.”

Karamo says scar tissue formed in his cheeks following the procedure, preventing saliva from draining properly and causing painful swelling.

“There’d be times you’d see me smile, and it was tight,” he says. “My cheeks would be big because they were full of saliva, full of scar tissue. I was in the worst pain.”

When he launched The Karamo Show in 2022, he said the physical symptoms became hard to manage while he was filming and sometimes he would “shoot six episodes a day” but there would be times when he was filming that his mouth “would get so dry and it would be so swollen.”

He later worked to lose 70 pounds during season two because it made the scar issue less visible.

“The scar tissue and the saliva were still there, but because I was skinnier, it looked kind of normal,” he says. “I stopped eating because it helped the feeling of not having so much scar tissue.”

One of the main reasons he’s opening up about his experience now is in the hopes that it will help other people.

“I know there’s other people suffering with their chronic pain,” he says. “I was fortunate enough to have the resources to find somebody who could help me, but I want to tell people that you don’t have to suffer alone. I wish I would have told people what I was going through and not allowed myself to just stay quiet.”

During the same interview, Karamo also broke his silence about the Queer Eye drama and allegations of bad behavior on set.

The 45-year-old Queer Eye star got candid in a new cover story with People about the conclusion of the series, which was tangled up in drama amid allegations of bullying and bad behavior behind-the-scenes.

If you didn’t know, he pulled out of a CBS Mornings segment to promote the final season due to fears of bullying.

Antoni Porowski recently opened up about how it all went down, and now Karamo is doing the same.

Karamo referenced years of toxicity with several of his co-stars, as well as bad behavior by executives and members of production, but said he and his co-stars “had always come together because of the fans, but because of the work I’d done on myself, I asked, ‘If I stay quiet right now and pretend I’m sick or something, whose peace am I protecting?’”

“Everyone would just say, ‘Well, that’s just that person,’ instead of saying, ‘This behavior does not fly in a professional environment. It impacted me negatively, consistently.”

Karamo also said that he relapsed during Season 3 after 12 years of being sober, and his mom allegedly heard several co-stars talking badly about him during a 2025 set visit. People also claims that “multiple sources” tell them it was Jonathan, Tan France and Antoni involved in the conversation.

“The thing I know is the tears I saw in my mother’s eyes. [She kept repeating], ‘I thought they were your friends.’ It made me realize I can no longer stay silent about how often I was made to feel like an outsider,” he told the outlet.

Karamo also said he and one of his co-stars had a “fun and flirty” relationship amid casting, and then a sexual harassment complaint was filed against him in the first few weeks of filming. He says he was cleared of the complaint, and accused his co-star of filing it, only to learn it was an anonymous third party.

“It broke us. We all knew the divide between us,” he says of the complaint.

A production source then told People that while they dispute Karamo‘s “characterization of events,” an investigation did take place, and “all parties wanted to move on with the show.”

He also claims a senior leader told him at one point: “You are not a star. I will get rid of you tomorrow.”

A production insider also said: “[They] wanted them to come in and rip the heroes’ houses apart and tell them how ugly everything was because that’s what the original Fab Five did. That catty gayness worked in the early 2000s, but that’s not who the new cast was.”

A source also said that Karamo‘s relationship with Jonathan and Tan was “fraught.”

“Jonathan was someone whose frustrations were often expressed openly. Others were more likely to create tension behind the scenes,” a source told People. (There was also a 2024 Rolling Stone investigation about Jonathan Van Ness’ alleged abusive behavior, which Jonathan denied.)

As for his thoughts on Jonathan today, Karamo said: “The work I have seen Jonathan pouring into himself is commendable and inspiring. Growth isn’t always public-facing, but I respect him for how he’s currently moving through life.”

“There were times I was hurt and would lash back out. I recognize my part and how things I did impacted people,” Karamo admitted.

“I think we all deserve a bit of grace for how we handled ourselves and one another. We were just doing our best. It may not have felt like that in the moment, but it’s very clear to me now.”

“I needed all these experiences to grow into my best self, and I want to spend these next chapters of my life doing good,” he added.

TV America and Scout Productions said in response to the People cover story: “We strongly disagree with any characterization that concerns raised during the production of Queer Eye were ignored, dismissed or allowed to continue unchecked. Throughout the series’ run, any issues brought to production leadership were taken seriously and addressed appropriately. Production consistently fostered a respectful and professional environment for the cast and crew — which included ongoing training, coaching and other support for the cast — maintaining clear workplace policies and practices throughout filming.”

“We remain incredibly proud of Queer Eye’s lasting impact and the community the series helped build over more than 20 years.”

The site reports that Karamo‘s mom came to set to visit one day and was wearing a headset to hear the dialogue while filming.

At one point, Karamo left and, while gone, his mom apparently was able to overhear the dialogue from Antoni, Tan, and Jonathan. TMZ is claiming that they “were overheard speaking negatively about Karamo, including criticizing certain lifestyle choices he makes.” She then reportedly told Karamo what she heard.

Tan, Antoni, and Jonathan have not released any kind of statement in response at this time.

I will say, our Queer Eye family, we’ve been doing this for almost a decade — which is pretty wild to believe — and families are complicated and we’re definitely not excluded from that. But I think two things can exist at the same time. And while that is definitely true, we’re also here to showcase these incredible heroes we have and really honor the legacy of this past decade of our lives and all these wonderful heroes that we’ve had the blessing of getting to meet and have conversations with.”

Jeremiah, who joined in season 9, said, “My experience in this group has been transformative. To see the way that they move through the world, the way that they have taught me so much about life and friendship and love. I have felt safe and supported by the people up here.”

Later on, they also appeared on the Today show where Karamo said in a video message that he “has felt mentally and emotionally abused for years,” and his therapist told him “to protect himself and his peace by not attending.”

Antoni once again made a statement, saying, “I think, definitely a little surprised, but at the same time, look, we’re so sorry that he’s not here. We fully support, I think as a collective unit, him taking care of himself and I think to echo what he’s saying, we’re here to honor the legacy of a decade, which is so wild to think about and all the heroes we’ve helped. And to just really put a spotlight on the incredible heroes we have this season in D.C.”

“I wish people would stop commenting on people’s photos. It’s ridiculous and tacky,” he told host Andy Cohen.

“The way people comment on my photos…I’ve had every plastic surgery. I’ve had everything. They’ve told me I had facelifts, nose jobs…It’s all real.”

“I wish I did. I want some. I ain’t gonna lie to y’all. The minute I get some work done, I’m gonna tell all y’all,” he added.

However, he did say he edits his photos.

“I do edit them because I like to smooth out my eyes, but I do think that we need to stop commenting on people’s photos, period,” he went on to say.

The comments on the YouTube page seemingly disagreed with him, and questioned his honesty.

“Karamo, please! You’ve had work done… don’t pretend,” reads one popular comment on YouTube.

“Karamo looks crazy. No filters but heavy makeup 😅,” another added.

“KARAMO!!!!! MA”AM!!!!!! Stop playing yourself, girl. Getting fillers IS getting work done. And dem fillers are fillering, hun. Stop it,” another wrote.

“I have to say, I swear on my mother’s life, my show announcement date was set. No, this was planned. Show announcements don’t happen on a whim,” Bobby told the publication of the announcement for his new show.

This didn’t stop Karamo from calling Bobby out for announcing the new show so soon after Queer Eye‘s end, he said.

Bobby told People, “Even Karamo was like, ‘Girl, the day after?’ I’m like, ‘No, no, no. I promise you it was already planned.”

He went on to say that it wasn’t just his costar that was unhappy with the timing.

“Some people were like, ‘Couldn’t you have waited?’ And I’m like, ‘Well, yes, but no,'” Bobby told the publication. “I mean, [Netflix] could have easily given me a heads-up on when that was going to be announced. I mean, I was on the show for [eight] seasons, but yeah, it’s fine.”

The location for the final season appears to be Washington, DC, based on the photo in the X post that was sent out. “10 seasons. Fab Five. One last go ‘round. The final season of Queer Eye is officially in production!,” they posted.

Original cast members Antoni Porowski, Jonathan Van Ness, Karamo Brown and Tan France all appear to be returning, with Jeremiah Brent back as well. If you don’t know, Jeremiah replaced Bobby Berk in season 9 and now, season 10. One of the fab five actually responded to allegations that he campaigned to get Bobby fired.

The 42-year-old Queer Eye star opened up in a new interview about how this is possible and why it’s okay, despite both the WGA and SAG-AFTRA entering their fourth and third months of striking.

It’s all because there are no writers, and no celebrities involved in Karamo‘s show at all.

“A lot of people have asked me, ‘why is your talk show [still filming]?’ It’s because we don’t work with celebrities, and I don’t have any writers on my show,” he told TheWrap. “Shows like mine are not part of that union because, again, no celebrities, no writers and it’s just me — [and] whatever comes up off the top of my head — and so we’re able to continue on.”

For his show, Karamo brings on regular people as his guests, and the upcoming season is set to debut next week.

“[I’m] still over here striking [and] supporting,” he added. “It just blows my mind that in 2023 and beyond we’re still talking about conversations of equity and equality, where we see somebody getting paid enormously and somebody else can’t even afford certain things.”

He also spoke of how grateful he is to be able to still film his show, as many others are not.

“I’m glad that I’m able to have this position where — because there’s no writers, and I’m the person who comes up with it, and we help real people — that I’m able to work, but I’m also right there in solidarity with everyone else.”

Over the past week, there have been a few other shows and hosts who are aiming to still film their own talk shows, angering both unions and fans all at the same time.

While talking with Andy Cohen, Karamo shared that he wasn’t invited to Antoni‘s bachelor party, ahead of his wedding to fiance Kevin Harrington.

“Did you go to Antoni‘s bachelor party?” Andy asked.

“I did not. I wasn’t invited…the shade of it all,” Karamo said.

“Bobby Berk was here yesterday, and he wasn’t invited either,” Andy said.

“No. Bobby was not invited, I was not invited, and Jonathan [Van Ness] was not invited,” Karamo said.

“So, wait. So, just Tan [France] was invited?” asked Andy.

“Just Tan was invited. The shade,” he responded.

“Now, Bobby made it seem like, ‘Oh, we couldn’t make it, but Tan was able to make it.’ He said it nicer,” Andy went on to say.

“No. Listen, I’m all about being real and being upfront. We weren’t invited and it’s just…this is the thing. When it comes to events like that, like family things, weddings, it costs money, so I don’t take offense to it,” Karamo said.

As for whether they’ll get a wedding invite, Karamo said: “I assume so, but if we were not, I would be okay because people who get married, you understand what it costs per plate and when you have family members doing things…I didn’t take any shade to it,” he continued.

“If you had a bachelor party, would you invite Antoni?” Andy asked, to which Karamo said: “I would not.”

” We see each other. I drink. I’m doing a shroom. I’m doing, you know, having a good time and he’s not,” he added, pointing out Antoni‘s sobriety.

“He’s sober, so I’m not gonna invite you girls so that you can be over in the corner sober. Like, no. So again, no shade.”

“You’ve never seen stories like this on Queer Eye,” Jonathan Van Ness told Distractify about season seven. “I went ham on these makeovers like I really pushed myself.”

“And so it’s been interesting to see how the transformations and how the stories have kind of evolved as a result of like, what we’ve all went through because from where we started to where we are now, like the world has been through so many shifts,” Jonathan continued.

“Our heroes are just so amazing. They’re so vulnerable. Their stories are so big. And I laughed harder than I ever laughed before watching this series back,” Jonathan said about the upcoming season. “I can’t wait for people to fall in love with it.”
