Steven Spielberg calls the movie “closer to fact than fiction”

In an interview with Extra, Steven talked about making another alien movie after big hits with E.T. and Close Encounters of the Third Kind.

“Well, I think it’s a departure from both E.T. and Close Encounters of the Third Kind, which could both fall into the fantasy category, or into what I call science speculation with Close Encounters as opposed to just pure sci-fi,” Steven said. “But I got very, very interested in this subject when people who were in the know – people in the Air Force, Navy pilots, people in Congress – when they all started talking about this after the New York Times in 2017 leaked the Tic Tac footage that we’ve all heard about and seen.”

Steven added, “I got really interested in this not as a science fiction film, but as a kind of summation for me as a filmmaker in this genre that includes both of the aforementioned films. And so I took this subject very seriously because it’s something that I think is closer to fact than fiction.”

The 43-year-old The Devil Wears Prada star recently appeared on Hot Ones and reflected on one of the most challenging scenes she filmed for director Steven Spielberg‘s highly anticipated new project.

According to Emily, a pivotal sequence required her character to communicate in a non-human language. While one possible solution involved using AI to create the sounds, the actress wasn’t enthused about that approach.

How did Emily Blunt create the strange sounds in her new movie?

“It’s a four-minute oner that we shot that leads up to that moment where she’s gradually sort of disintegrating. There’s various ways you could do it. You could go the AI route, which I’m a bit terrified of. I thought I could make some really strange sounds.”

Rather than rely on technology, Emily wanted to create the performance herself.

“I said maybe I could come in and we’ll just do a range of weird sounds. And it’s what we did,” she shared. “I did sort of the clicking sounds, I did sort of humming sounds, consonant sounds, breathing strange sounds.”

The actress explained that the production’s sound department then took those recordings and transformed them into the final effect heard in the movie.

Using strategically placed microphones and specialized audio techniques, the sound team was able to capture the various noises Emily created and build them into what she described as the finished “weird sound” for the scene shown in the trailer embedded below.

Emily‘s comments arrive amid ongoing conversations throughout Hollywood about the growing use of AI in filmmaking and whether the tech should replace elements traditionally created by humans.

Emily showed up for the season two screening of Felicity‘s TV show Rivals on Monday night (May 18) at the Crosby Street Hotel in New York City.

Felicity made her debut as an executive producer with the Hulu series, which launched season two last week.

In April, Felicity was on the red carpet to support Emily at the premieres of The Devil Wears Prada 2 around the world. If you didn’t know, Felicity is also married to Stanley Tucci, who she met thanks to Emily becoming friends with him on the first movie.

Felicity is a literary agent, who represents author Jilly Cooper, the writer of the novel Rivals. That’s how she got involved with the series!

Also in attendance at the screening were actors Alex Hassell, Nafessa Williams, Bella Maclean, and David Tennant.

Set in the stunning Cotswolds countryside and against the backdrop of the glamorous, high-stakes world of 1980s British television, the second installment reunites the all-star cast who captivated fans and critics, while introducing some exciting new faces. The eight-figure salaries for each actress were well-worth the spend because the movie has already grossed more than $250 million worldwide after just six days in theaters.

Meryl, Anne, and Emily each earned $12.5 million for The Devil Wears Prada 2

Sources told Variety that each actress was given a $12.5 million salary for their work in the sequel and that number is before any bonuses for box office performance.

With the movie performing incredibly well at the box office, those bonuses seem to be guaranteed and Variety reports that they could earn over $20 million each if the grosses continue at the current rate.

The budget of The Devil Wears Prada 2 was reportedly $100 million, with $37.5 million of that number going to the three stars. Those salaries amounted to more than the $35 million budget of the first movie.

It took 20 years for the sequel to be made, but the cast has already acknowledged that it won’t be possible to wait another 20 years to make a third movie.

For context, Meryl Streep is about to turn 77 and Stanley Tucci is currently 65. That would make them 97 and 85 in a third installment!

So, what are the cast members saying about a potential additional movie?

Meryl told EW, “I hope they don’t wait 20 years!”

Stanley told the outlet, “I don’t think we can do it in another 20 years. We have to do it sooner than that, because I’ll be dead.” He joked that a third movie in 20 years will only be possible “if they exhume us” from a graveyard.

Emily Blunt said, “We believe in letting a lot of time sizzle between these movies.” She wants to have more scenes with her real-life brother-in-law Stanley though, as they didn’t in the second movie. “We love what we got to do, but we didn’t get enough to do together,” she said.

Anne Hathaway is putting a realistic outlook on a third movie, saying that we have to wait for the box office results to see if Disney will greenlight another film. Based on the opening day numbers, it looks like the movie is going to be a big hit.

“I hope so, I feel like there’s more road to explore. But, we’ll probably have a better idea of that [when the film comes out],” she told Entertainment Weekly.

David Frankel, the returning director, also thinks we need to wait and see. He told EW, “Let’s see what happens. It’s show business. It’s anybody’s guess. We said no 20 years ago, and here we are. I don’t want to say yes now. They are very rich characters, they’re amazing actors, there’s great screenwriting, so I could imagine that these characters might live on.”

The 53-year-old actor was pulled over by police while on his way home from the event on Thursday afternoon (April 30) in Los Angeles.

Photos and video obtained by TMZ show Dwayne chatting with a cop while pulled over in a gas station parking lot on Sunset Boulevard. At one point, he gets out of the car to grab something in the back seat and then gets back in the driver’s seat to continue talking to the police officer.

TMZ reports that Dwayne was pulled over because of the tinted windows on his vehicle.

Just hours earlier, Dwayne spoke on behalf of his Jungle Cruise and The Smashing Machine co-star Emily Blunt as she received a star on the Walk of Fame.

Meryl Streep, Anne Hathaway, Emily Blunt, and Stanley Tucci all returned for the next movie, 20 years later, and we have all the spoilers on what their characters are up to today.

Two decades after the events of The Devil Wears Prada, Andy (Hathaway) is now a respected journalist, but she loses her job in a very public layoff. At the same time, Runway Magazine is going through a scandal as Miranda (Streep) approved an article about fast fashion that received a lot of backlash. Elias-Clarke chairman Irv Ravitz decides to hire Andy to be the new features editor at Runway to add some respectability to the magazine, much to the dismay of Miranda.

Miranda has to win back the trust of Runway‘s advertisers with help from Andy’s new editorial focus, including fashion brand Dior, where Emily (Blunt) now works as an executive. One article that wins Andy some favor from her bosses is an exclusive story on billionaire Sasha Barnes (Lucy Liu).

Miranda has been preparing for her new role as the Head of Global Content for all of Elias-Clarke’s magazines, including Runway, but then Irv dies at his birthday party. His son Jay (BJ Novak) takes over, but clearly doesn’t have the same vision and starts recommending major cuts to the magazine. While at Milan Fashion Week, Andy comes up with a plan to save the magazine, but she gets betrayed.

Emily betrays Miranda and Andy and becomes the villain of the movie

Andy comes up with a plan to save Runway Magazine by working with Emily, who then betrays her. Emily is now dating billionaire Benji Barnes (Justin Theroux) and they convince him to purchase Runway.

While Andy is under the assumption that they’re purchasing Runway to preserve the magazine and keep Miranda as the editor-in-chief, Emily actually is secretly planning on having Miranda fired so she can be the new head of the magazine. Andy learns of the betrayal when they tell Miranda of the news and Miranda reveals that she knows what is going on.

We also learn that Miranda kicked Emily out of Runway years ago because she didn’t think she had what it takes to be successful at the magazine. Miranda is the one who secured Emily her job at Dior.

So, how do they save the day?

Andy finds a new buyer to secure Miranda’s promotion and keep her at Runway

At Miranda’s instruction, Andy spends a full day calling all potential buyers to secure a new owner of the magazine and block Benji’s deal. She’s successful!

Benji’s ex-wife Sasha comes through with a deal to buy all of Elias-Clarke and she makes Miranda the new Head of Global Content, just as Irv planned.

After the magazine is saved, Nigel (Stanley Tucci), reveals to Andy that he was the one who suggested to Irv that they hire Andy as the new features editor. He had been watching her closely for all of these years!

Miranda also finally admits to Andy that she always knew she was going to achieve greatness, despite previously pretending that she didn’t remember her after reuniting in the office. Andy gets a nicer office at Runway.

In the end, Benji breaks up with Emily, who dyes her hair blonde and gets a new job at Coach. She and Andy make up and become friends again.

The 43-year-old The Devil Wears Prada 2 actress appeared on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon on Tuesday evening (April 28), and revealed that her husband’s Golden Globes look from earlier this year almost received a hard “no” from her.

“I’ll be honest … I have a full organ rejection to turtlenecks usually,” she said. “When John pitched me this outfit and he was like, ‘And it’s a turtleneck,’ I had to compose my face into, like, impassive, ‘Oh, that sounds great,’ you know?’”

“But then when I saw [him], I thought he looked like Michael Caine. He looked so cool. ‘60s vibe. But normally a man in the turtleneck gives me the ick. Sorry to any turtleneck wearers tonight,” she shared.

Another fashion ick for her? She said, “I don’t mind, like, a James Dean leather jacket, but if we’re looking at a dad leather jacket, where it’s a little bomber jacket and it’s very shiny? A little tight. And cropped.”

Lauren Weisberger, who wrote the original book, was one of Anna Wintour‘s junior assistants, and was hired by Leslie. They apparently worked together for 8 months.

“I definitely told her a million girls would kill for the job. That was definitely my line because I actually really believed that, and I knew that she didn’t necessarily wanna be there,” Leslie said. If you don’t know, that’s an iconic line from the first film.

When the book was published in 2003, she met up with Anna Wintour. “I got a call from Anna‘s office saying that she wanted to see me. I was petrified. [Anna] said, ‘Who’s Lauren Weisberger? And I said, ‘She was your junior assistant. And she’s like, ‘Well, she wrote a book about us, and you’re worse than me,'” Leslie explained. “I wanted to, like, ask more questions, but you can’t really ask her that many questions.”

About the book getting published, Leslie said, “It just felt like this exposure. Even though someone obviously advised her to make it fiction, it was really based off of a lot of things that, you know, I lived, she lived.”

Leslie recalled working with Lauren: “I probably was not very nice, and I probably was high-strung because I felt like I was having to do her job as well. So for me, that was really frustrating. I think she was probably just sitting there writing a book and not necessarily taking the job as seriously as I did.”

“We never talked again after she left,” she added.

Leslie also said she once told Emily Blunt this information, but Emily didn’t seem interested. “I said to her, I was like, ‘I just need to let you know, I’m Emily.’ She was not that interested, to be honest. I thought I was gonna get this, like, huge reaction. Like, no. It was like, ‘Oh, okay,’” she recalled.

“Shout out an amazing note that Emily gave when we were in the very early script stage,” Anne said on stage. “She noticed that the core four [Anne, Emily, Meryl Streep and Stanley Tucci] didn’t have enough scenes together.”

“And so, I’ll say one of my favorite scenes in the entire movie is when the core four are finally reunited,” she continued. “And that’s because of Emily’s suggestion.”

Anne also noted that it didn’t really hit her that they made a sequel 20 years later until she was heading to the premiere!

“It hit me while I was on my way to the premiere. I was like, ‘Oh, we did it! Oh, this is happening. The Devil Wears Prada 2 is coming out!’ That was the moment for me, legit,” she said.

Emily added, “All of us together were like this very accelerated family on the first one. So to come back together, it was really powerful for me being in that table read. I was like, ‘Oh sh-t, we’re doing this.”
